My Help Comes From God

"My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." Psalms 121:2 (NIV)

This seemingly simple statement actually has great significance when we look at what the psalmists constantly say about God, compared to the heathen gods - and for us, many other religions

The point is that both Judaism and Christianity are in total agreement that there is only one God, not many. We share a mono-theistic view in our belief in God.

And He is not a God of the heavens - like a Star God or a Sun God or a Moon God or any other celestial constellation. Nor is He a God of earth, such as animals or things, like gold or silver. He is not animate or inanimate.

He is above all these and any heavenly or earthly gods that man worshiped and still worships.

Lanier, the author of "Christianity on Trial" says, "In Genesis, one God creates everything: heavens, earth, sky, seas, land, vegetation, sun, moon, stars, animals and people... The one God is over all of nature. He controls everything." (W. Mark Lanier, 2014)

Thus our verse today is theologically consistent with all the Psalms and the Old and New Testament saying that, our God is the maker of everything on the earth and beyond the earth (even the gods people worship). He created all things and said it was good, not evil - nor to be used for evil and certainly not to be worshiped. He alone is our help. We turn, not to the mountains, nor the stars for guidance and strength, but to Him only.

When we are tempted to look elsewhere, we affirm with Psalm 121:
"I lift up my eyes to the mountains - where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." Psalms 121:1-2

He alone is to be worshiped. Let's worship Him!
