Who Am I?
In Google search: About 25 270 000 000 results
It is very clear from the +25 billion search results on Google, that this is one of the top questions about life, on the internet.
So my fascination with the meeting points of science and faith and the mind has drawn me to look into this age-old question.
Nathan Dennis in his article, “Who am I?” The answer to life’s most defining question", wrote that:
“The “answer” to “who am I” is our identity. Our identity is our all-encompassing system of memories, experiences, feelings, thoughts, relationships, and values that define who each of us is."
Although very pragmatic and accessible - like the full article - this view relies on a psych-social definition of "who I am".
This is a very limiting view, and it is deeply troubling because it assumes that man is not a spiritual being connected to or disconnected from a personal God.
The most important defining feature of humanity is that we are made in the image of God - we carry His blueprint! We are not psychological beings in a physical body. We are spiritual beings in a physical body, having psycho-social experiences.
The lyrics of the song "Who am I?" below give a more accurate view of humanity in all its beauty, realness and ugliness.
The essential message is, that I am a created being with my identity wrapped within the Source - God. (Philippians 4:19)
And when I make peace with God, I become a child of God the Father – a King's Kid! Unashamedly so, by grace.
Who Am I - by Casting Crowns
Lyrics
Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt?
Who am I, that the bright and morning star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart?
Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are
I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
You've told me who I am
I am Yours
Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love
And watch me rise again?
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me?
Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are
