What is my purpose? How do I find my Life Purpose?

What is my purpose? How do I find it?

Your life purpose consists of the deep motivating aims of your life and maybe the reasons you get up in the morning. Personally, I favour the word passion. Your inner drive is aligned with your unique talent.

When you find and harness your unique talents you often uncover your passion and life purpose. Usually, this process takes inner work and reflection.

"Purpose can guide life decisions, influence behavior, shape goals, offer a sense of direction, and create meaning. For some people, purpose is connected to vocation - meaningful, satisfying work. For others, their purpose lies in their responsibilities to their family or friends. Others seek meaning through spirituality or religious beliefs. Some people may find their purpose clearly expressed in all these aspects of life." - Barb Leonard, PhD, RN, PNP and Mary Jo Kreitzer, RN, PhD

Case study

Here's a small case study about Sally (kept anonymous and private).

"I have a job as a legal aide, which is pretty interesting and pays fairly well. But my real love is music. I love to play my cello, and I practice a few hours a day. I especially love to perform for others and bring beauty to a special occasion, like a wedding."

Here are my observations and impressions:

1. What gets Sally up in the morning is probably her legal aide job, with the money she needs to live and survive.

2. What could be a significant career (and life purpose) for someone else, is only "interesting" for Sally. Little or no passion there!

3. Sally's true passion is performing with her cello, bringing beauty to people. This is her true passion and life purpose.

4. The big question is, will she follow her purpose? Or will she allow the comfortable "interesting" job to hinder her from pursuing her passion wholeheartedly?

Many people have a significant dream, a vision or purpose, but don't make it a priority and this can result in poor performance at work and a rather empty and meaningless life - and in some cases depression.

Where do you stand on this matter? Will you follow your heart or vote with your feet for safety and comfort?

There is another question to consider, A question not just for the spiritual or religious types: What purpose has God got in store for you?

One of my most special Scripture verses since 2011, which I stumbled across during a family and personal crisis, is in the book of the prophet Jeremiah.

"I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope." Jeremiah 29:11

I was given confirmation of this word in three very different ways that convinced me this message was for me personally and timeously.

God's word can provide clarity on your talents and life purpose. A word may be wide-angled or very specific to your situation.

What are you waiting for?
